Well there isn’t much to say that hasn’t already been said about the state of our union at this time with regard to Covid-19 … and yet, is there still a little more?
For this time of year always has been, and always will be, as Charles Dickens’ wonderful ghosts reminded Ebenezer Scrooge, “a time of giving.”
A time to step outside of ourselves just a little more than usual and turn our gaze toward those around us.
And in small ways, for this is especially the time when modest gestures, simple givings and local awareness are what we have to offer most.
Travel around the country is all but ground to a halt as families hunker down together. Longings for celebrations with friends inspire wistful fantasies — promises of another year to come. Yet quietly an opportunity presents itself.
While we seek to move toward a brighter future in 2021, perhaps just for now, we might turn our heads left and right and notice our surroundings.
What do we see?
Is someone nearby alone this season? Does the lady on the next street use help picking up some things from the store? Are there some children or even adults who might appreciate a few cupcakes dropped off on the porch.
A note to say, “Have a happy holiday; thinking of our neighbors.” Phoning someone you have not spoken to in a while — a call you always thought about making but never followed through.
There are so many little ways to brighten someone’s life while brightening your own at the same time. Just by a simple gesture.
Covid-19, while limiting our lives in many ways, also has provided a lens through which to focus our values, our character, our patience, our creativities. For when distractions of life become limited, we as humans are forced to adapt.
Most important of all to remember that relationships first and foremost keep us healthy, happy and humble.
To quote another wise and humble character from “A Christmas Carol,” dear Bob Cratchet’s young son, Tiny Tim, while balancing himself on his single crutch, took time to remind the world, “God bless us, every one.”
